Check out my latest exclusive interviewand video with the iconic Brit brand, Cambridge Satchel Company! More to come this week :)

STYLE, BLOGGING & NEW YORK CITY BY EMMA SOUSA

It’s that time of year again – fashion week is just around the corner and New York City is about to kick off the SS17 shows in style. NYFW is always a favorite of ours as it played a very important role in one of the early chapters of our story. Back in 2010, our Founder & CEO Julie contacted up and coming American fashion bloggers and asked them if they’d like to carry one of our bags to fashion week. The bags were spotted on the front row and caused a bit of a stir. The week ended with New York Times hailing our classic satchel as ‘the Brit IT bag’.

This year we’re celebrating the start of fashion season with another New York story. Stylist and blogger Emma Sousa has styled three of her favorite bags from our collection and taken them and us on a tour of New York City. In between filming, we stole five minutes with Emma to chat about her personal style, starting a career in fashion in the Big Apple and what she’s looking forward to most about fashion week.

Tell us about yourself and your career so far, how did you become a fashion stylist?
I was actually a Marketing and International Business major from the University of Tennessee, but my freshman year I met a woman who had been designing for Rebecca Taylor and she basically said (in regard to getting into fashion) “you can do it”. So I did. I had two summer internships in Manhattan, the second of which was at Lucky Magazine where I landed a freelance position post graduation. I assisted the senior fashion editor there, Elle Strauss, who quickly took me under her wing and then to Shopbop.com’s editorial team. After a few wonderful years there, I took a leap of faith into the freelance world and been here ever since. It’s a crazy, unpredictable way of working, but so full of possibilities and creativity. It has pushed me harder than I’ve ever pushed myself before and I am so so grateful for it.

What advice would you give anyone who wants to be a stylist?
Start early with internships, be ready to work and no is never an answer. I’m not going to sit here and say fashion is a cakewalk. But if you love it, it can be the most unbelievably rewarding thing.

What’s your ‘getting ready’ process in the morning, how do you go about putting an outfit together?
I am not a morning person. Hah! As a busy New Yorker you develop a sort of uniform that you then tend to gravitate towards in the mornings. But a lot of the time it just depends on how I’m feeling and what I’ll be doing that day.

How would you describe your personal style?
I should have a one word answer for this but I don’t! Minimalistic that either skews 90s or 70s!

If you could swap wardrobes with a celebrity for a day, who would you choose and why?
Definitely Kate Moss or if she doesn’t count because she’s a model then Sienna Miller. No explanation needed I think?

You also have your own personal style blog. Tell us a bit about how that came about?
I started my blog when I first moved to New York and hadn’t started styling yet. I knew it was “a thing” and so I figured I’d give it go. Plus, it was great practice for me to style myself and concept with photographers. It was amazing meeting different people through the blog and also building different symbiotic relationships between the blog and styling.

How do you juggle styling and maintaining your blog?
I’d like to say I balance them but it is extremely hard. Styling is my job but I love blogging too much and put too much behind it to let it fizzle. Let’s just say I don’t sleep a whole lot.

Tell us about living in New York? How long have you been there?
I’ve lived in New York for three and a half years but it feels like much longer. My mom is from Long Island so I grew up road-tripping every summer. I had always loved visiting the city but it wasn’t until my first internship here that I knew I was going to stay for a long time.

Are you excited about New York Fashion Week?
Always. Fashion can be so focused on selling and buying and making customers happy but at fashion week it’s about celebrating the art that is fashion. The creativity and the thought process behind the form, color, pattern and texture of the clothes. NYFW is a show, a presentation, a performance. It’s a wonderful time to be in the city.

Any up and coming designers you’re particularly excited about?
The up-and-comers are always my favorite as I think they have the most original and fresh designs. My favorites from last season include Sally LaPointe, Zero + Maria Cornejo, and Creatures of Comfort. Baja East is another great one to watch. And I’m excited to see more of Brock Collection and Andrea Jiapei Li.

What keeps you inspired?
Beautiful images and music. I love to utilize online outlets but I find most of my inspirations from old polaroids at my grandmother’s house. I love still tearing pages and pages out of the print copies of Vogue, L’Officiel, W, and Self Service-- there’s nothing like holding the paper in your hand. And in terms of music, you’ll often find me listening to Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra while styling my next story. It's the "vintage vice" inside me.

Finally what’s next for you, what can we expect to see next?
Hopefully more and more amazing content for styling and the blog. I find myself growing and meeting new and exciting talent to work with everyday so I cannot wait to share some other beautiful projects with my viewers and readers very soon.

Velvet by Graham & Spencer Top / AYR Shorts / Aska Sandals

A major heat wave in NYC has people sprinting towards any available water (or AC) source. I'm just pretending we're in SoCal. Baja knit, oversized linen shorts, and therapeutic looking sandals complete a look that so effortless summer... just completely mis-planted in the middle of the West Village. Working like a crazy person so excuse the delay and shorter posts but shop the links, enjoy, and also keep eyes on Insta & an occasional Snap story.

IMAGINE BY JOHN LENNON

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... Aha-ah...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace... You, ..

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world... You, ..

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Rachel Comey Top & Denim / Tory Burch Sandals

Thankfully as time has evolved, comfort has become a more prevalent factor when designers are creating garments for the “everyday woman”. I mean who wakes up in the morning and thinks, “Man, I really want to put on a stiff wool suit for work today”? For me some days it’s “is a garbage bag acceptable?” But all jokes aside, women today are not what they used to be. We’re moving, multitasking, getting shit done, so we need clothes that allow us to do all that AND look good while doing it. I find that summer is primetime for easy clothes and we have a bit more flexibility with it. I love a loose pant that transitions well from outside to in (think 100 degrees to 65) and a thin strap tank, basic or more interesting, like this origami-inspired one that I styled in a few variations. Both simple pieces that can be worked in different ways but without the fuss. I capped off the look with my favorite summer shoe style – the short heel sandal—cute, quirky, and that tiny extra lift. Just what I need it to be, the outfit is easy, breezy, (comfortable), and stylish.

Rachel Comey Denim Trench, Crop Top, Shorts / Tory Burch Platforms

We're taking the Canadian Tuxedo to a whole new level. Denim brand fav with the always essential nod to the 90s, Rachel Comey comes in for the denim win as I pair denim on denim on denim. I practically fell on the floor when I discovered these drawstring denim shorts in their NYC showroom this spring. Flashback to circa 1998 when I used to rock balloon shorts that were way to big for me (and needless to say not much has changed). I added a slight roll at the bottom to get a bit more leg and an epic platform espadrille by Tory Burch for added leg length. To show off that epic waistline, I paired the shorts with a patchwork denim crop top. Topped off with probably the softest denim I've encountered, this trench if worn open displays all the details and has an awesome flow as you walk. You'll be feeling like a denim super hero. Shop the links to get my denim dream.

Sonia Rykiel Denim Top / Rachel Comey Jeans / Tory Burch Wedges

If you've been following AVV for a while, you know I'm a lover of denim. From $5 vintage cutoffs to discovering the newest denim brands all over the US, denim is one of my favorite categories. A closet staple but constantly being reinvented and reimagined, jeans in any color, shape, and form create a great palette to build your look upon.

One of my favorite silhouettes that has risen again is the relaxed, straight leg. We take the 90s version, lighten the fabric in both weight and color and create the perfect pair to match with just about anything in your closet. I was sucked in by the denim on denim addict inside me and paired these perfect straights with one of the most epic denim shirts and gold molded wedges I've ever encountered. The tonal embellishments on the top and metal sculptural quality in the shoe add just that extra bit of flair to take your denim from basic to "high street chic" in seconds. Shop the links above to get the look and stay tuned for more denim favorites!

Aeron Top (similar)/ Jill Stuart Sweater (similar) / By Malene Birger Skirt / Won Hundred Mule

I'm typically a tomboy at heart, but everyone once in a while I like to feel pretty :) In my personal opinion, there's nothing quite as "womanly" as a low-slung, cut-on-the-bias skirt that hugs your hips just so and flows perfectly when it catches the breeze. By Malene Birger or MBM as I like to call it makes a beautiful skirt that is just that in a delicious creamy color with a touch of textured detail. In true natural form, I paired the skirt with equally neutral colors. A flowy but sculpted button down layered over a ribbed sweater continues to add different levels of texture and tonal colors. Finished with the most amazing block heel mules and a good cup of tea, it was a wonderfully girly day.

Aeron Top / Vince Cardigan / Joseph Trouser / Vince Mule / SmithLab Scarf

As I transition into summer, my wardrobe tends to slowly turn completely white. It's the failproof summer "color" and looks great in every fabric and silhouette. Staying true to my love for minimalism, I love playing with sculptural shapes, breezy notes, and attention to detail. The wrap-like form of this tank finished with raw edge texture, the oversized crepe pants that puddle perfectly at the ground, and the sheer sweater that drapes and adds that extra comfort level... Each piece is perfectly minimal, yet unique in its own way. Finished with my favorite long silk scarf and chunky heel sandal, it's a perfect summer look that works for drinks and oysters at Grand Banks to brunch and vintage shopping in the West Village.

Alice McCall Top and Pant / Miista Bootie / Lack of Color Hat / Sunday Somewhere Sunnies

It's been a hot minute but needless to say, the juggle of styling and blogging can get a little crazy! Hopefully you've been following me on Insta to see up-to-date adventures. Speaking of adventures, this look had me ready to travel. Shot at my favorite Greek restaurant in the Lower East Side (Souvlaki), the bright colors and patterns were so fun to play into with my vacay-inspired look. I love a good matching set and I especially admired the unique qualities in this Alice McCall duo. The tailored silhouettes in black added a new edge and menswear quality to a typically feminine eyelet. Paired with a bright boot and straw hat, I created a look that is uniquely mine and has me ready to venture anywhere from Mykonos to Cannes. Any fun summer plans abroad? Comment in the box below!

Mr. Larkin Blazer and Dress / Grenson Loafer / Coach Bag

Creamy. The adjective could describe so many different things: the texture of moisturizer, the taste of ice cream, or simply a variation of the color white. As winter is finally wrapping in NYC, my skin is as I like to call it... creamy. Not pasty, but creamy and vastly contrasted from my dark hair. In order to keep my look from going completely goth, I've been drawn to lighter tones to create my outfits. Layering pale pinks, beiges, and creamy whites, compliment my skin without fully washing me out. Straight-forward silks and knits in minimalistic silhouettes pair seamlessly with these colors to create an effortlessly cool look. Check out the links above to get my favorite combination of a column dress, flowy blazer, and contrasting platform loafer.

Mr. Larkin Top / AMO Denim / Vintage Baker Heels (similar or here)

Two of my favorite things in NYC: SoHo and fire escapes. I personally have deemed my fire escape my "deck" and use it for everything from morning coffee to photoshoots. This specific "scape" was in SoHo which is just... beautiful. Avoid Broadway and hit Crosby, Mercer, and Elizabeth for the best shops (especially those unique to NYC). Speaking of unique things, you know I love to highlight new brands that are making a statement. Mr. Larkin is doing just that. Fresh silhouettes and patterns, this transcontinental brand is producing pieces with ease, sensibility, and that special touch of something different. I loved the "handsy" print on this Mr. Larkin boxy top in soft pastel colors. Contrasted with a raw edge denim and chunky kitten heels, I found a perfect uniform equation that will take me seamlessly into spring. Shop the links above to get the full look and head into the SoHo side streets (or nearest fire escape) on your next Manhattan trip!

Ulla Johnson Blazer + Pant / Coclico Mule

In my personal opinion, there is nothing chicer than a woman in a suit. Whether you go sharp and taliored or light and loose, it's clean, put together, and effortless. I love a good white on white look and so this suit by Ulla Johnson was an instant fave. Oversized feel, no top, and a mule feels current, fresh, and springy. Fittingly enough, I ran into one of my favorite restaurants while shooting this look that had a special dedication to David Bowie. Worlds aligned as he was one of the first major musicians to rock the white suit in 70s. Just another great example of fashion's cyclical nature and how so many modern trends are rooted in vintage :)

Mason by Michelle Mason Slip Dress / Alex Monroe Necklace / Pared Sunnies / Tibi Mules

For some reason, the moment I step off the plane in California, I'm smiling. The sun beating down (I'll take an endless summer), the warmth, it's convincing. A usual sucker for all things neutral, this trip was tempting me to whip out my sunshine colored slip dress. Mason makes one of my favorite silhouettes in the silkiest material with the cleanest keyhole you've ever seen. Easy, minimal, slightly sexy, it's the perfect dress for day to night, spring to late summer. The mini length makes it a great fit with a simple sneaker, or mix things up with a metallic mule. Finished with pale pink sunnies and personal jewelry, you have a look that will be turning heads and frowns upside down.

She Made Me Bikini (Bottom) / Graham & Spencer Top / Garrett Leight Sunnies / Espadrille Slides / Vintage Bracelet

There nothing quite like a gauzy top, crochet bikini, and your favorite sunnies to take you instantly into vacation mode. Running through the town and cliffs of La Jolla, San Diego, this was the outfit that had me smiling into the sun. Excuse the paleness, but my obsession with whites and creams runs through winter to summer. I loved the crochet detailing and high neck on this bohemian swim set by She Made Me. Over top I added a (you guessed it) oversized airy top and down below some easy espadrilles. Finished off with very Beatles-esque round sunnies and my list for the day I was ready for some Cali exploring. After some light rock climbing which I'm not sure I'd suggest (#anythingfortheshot) the next spots to definitely add to your list -- Torrey Pines State Park for a beautiful hike, a long drive along the coast, and end the day at Miguel's for a classic frozen marg and the ceviche.

Rodebjer Caftan and Tote (similar) / Splendid Espadrilles / Pared Sunnies

When heading on vacay, the throw-on-wherever-you-are dress is an absolute necessity for me. You can probably relate. Half of the time I pack all these outfits and end up wearing the same few things the whole time. Whether it’s a shirtdress, slipdress, or caftan, having a relaxing vacation includes being comfortable while you’re there. My current beach town essential is the caftan (in true oversized-lover form). This one in particular by favorite Rodebjer is perfect to toss on for a trip to the market or ending the day from the beach to the bar.  I paired mine with a neutral striped espadrille, woven tote, and Joy-inspired sunnies. 70s babe dreams forever. You know the deal --> links above, shop now, etc.
